Cruise on a return ferry service from Auckland via Gulf Harbour to Tiritiri Matangi Island. Explore this beautiful island wildlife sanctuary with an abundance of birdlife, native bush and extensive walking tracks. Operating in partnership with Ngāi Tai Te Haeranga.

Experience the beauty and birdsong on this island sanctuary, home to an unrivalled range of wildlife following one of the country’s most successful community-led conservation projects.

This pest-free island provides a safe haven for rare native species including Kōkako and Takahē. Take a walk with an experienced guide to help you spot the native species and find out more about the island’s conservation programme – available to pre-book with your ferry ticket.

Duration
  • This experience will takes approximately 80 minutes from Auckland or 25 minutes from Gulf Harbour
  • Please note the longer return trip duration on weekends and public holidays is due to additional stop at Home Bay, on some occasions this stop will not be required and the vessel will return to the Viaduct at 4:50pm

  • This experience departs Auckland from the Explore Booking Kiosk in Viaduct Harbour

Additional Information
  • There is no phone available for use on the island apart from in an emergency
  • There is a visitor centre and shop near the lighthouse which is normally open 11am - 3pm from Wednesday - Sunday where souvenirs and cold drinks can be purchased
  • There is no food for sale on the island so please remember to take your own food and snacks for the day and pack in a sealable container
  • Toilets are located at the Tiritiri Matangi Wharf, Hobbs Beach and the lighthouse
  • Smoking is restricted to the designated area at the wharf and outside the visitor centre
  • Please keep to the tracks so you don't disturb plants, birds or scientific studies
  • Dogs are not permitted
  • Fires and portable barbeques are not permitted
  • There are no rubbish bins on the island, so please remember to take all your rubbish with you when you leave
  • Bicycles, scooters and skateboards are not permitted on the island
  • If you wish to stay overnight on Tiritiri Matangi Island, you will need to book your return ferry tickets directly with our reservations team. Please email info@exploregroup.co.nz or call 0800 397 567 to arrange.
  • Your overnight accommodation at the Tiritiri Matangi Island bunkhouse will need to be booked separately via the Department of Conservation.
